La Romería del Rocío (Rocío Pilgrimage, Huelva, Andalusia) is one of Spain’s deepest-rooted festivities. It takes place on Pentecost Sunday. Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims come to Aldea del Rocío on foot, by carts, on horseback or by car, to pay their respect and show their devotion to the chapel's Virgin. |

There are currently over 100 brotherhoods, with Altamonte (dating from 1648) being the oldest. They all walk their own routes, year after year, faithfully marching behind the Simpecado with their families, amidst an aura of celebration and religious fervour that is hard to explain to the uninitiated.
