Somiedo Natural Park is located in the Cantabrian mountain range, spanning some 39.000 hectares between the municipalities of Belmonte de Miranda, Teverga and Somiedo itself. It was simultaneously the first ever natural park as well as the first ever Biosphere Reserve to be launched in Asturias, clearly making it a unique natural space. |

Woodland spans almost one quarter of its extension, and the mountains are its main feature par excellence. This piece of land is home to 50% of all Cantabrian mountain bears, as well as wolves, capercaillies, golden eagles and a myriad other species who have found their ideal habitat here.
The low population density and its inhabitants’ sustainable use of natural resources throughout the centuries have allowed this unique enclave to remain intact. My purpose with this feature is to show it to you, paying special attention to the human element that has played such a fundamental role in the park being what it is today.
